The story of Potz and Panz Gourmet Café

In the heart of Stone Mountain, Georgia, exists a gem discovered in the culinary world known as Potz and Panz Gourmet Café. Founded by Chef Demonica Pugh in 1999, this historic café has served as a beacon of authentic southern soul food for over 17 years. Known for its homestyle cooking and warm, inviting atmosphere, Potz and Panz has become a cherished institution for food lovers, offering a dining experience that makes every guest feel at home.

Chef Demonica Pugh

A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Chef Demonica Pugh’s love affair with food began at an early age. Raised in a family where cooking was a deeply-rooted tradition, Demonica spent her childhood watching her grandmothers craft extraordinary southern dishes. These early experiences inspired her to dream big, planting the seeds of ambition in her heart. Her determination to open her own restaurant was driven by a passion for sharing her culinary heritage with the world.

Overcoming Life’s Challenges

The journey to becoming the “Queen of Soul Food” was not without its challenges. Growing up as the eldest of four sisters, Demonica took on the role of caretaker in a household that demanded perseverance. With a loving sibling, her sister who had cerebral palsy and required special care, cooking and cleaning became essential responsibilities for Demonica at a young age. She quickly learned the value of hard work and determination, skills that would later define her success in the kitchen.

Breaking Barriers in the Culinary World

In 1984, Demonica took her first steps into the world of professional cooking by securing a job at McDonald’s. This experience, combined with her work at other fast-food restaurants during her high school years at Sidney Lanier, helped her develop a strong foundation in the culinary arts. It was during this time that Montgomery called upon Demonica’s talents, and she answered, rising from a prep cook at Darrell’s Restaurant to one of the most respected chefs in the region.

Her breakthrough came in 1996 when Demonica became the first Black female chef from Montgomery to work at the prestigious Marriott Hotel in downtown Atlanta. This historic milestone took place during the Olympic Games, solidifying her place as a trailblazer in the culinary world.

Felisha C. Pugh

Supporting Demonica in her culinary endeavors is Felisha C. Pugh, who has worn many hats over the years. In 2012, Felisha opened Changez Beauty Supply, showcasing her versatility and entrepreneurial spirit. However, it wasn’t long before she was wooed by Executive Chef Demonica Pugh to join Potz and Panz Gourmet Catering as the Director of Sales. In this role, Felisha has become the point person for parties, weddings, book club luncheons, and all types of food events. Her bubbly personality, true love of people, and contagious laughter have made her an invaluable asset to the team. Felisha often hosts parties at the kitchen, keeping glasses full and orchestrating fun for everyone around.

All About Juice

In addition to their work at Potz and Panz, Demonica and Felisha embarked on another culinary venture, “All About Juice,” which started in the kitchen of their home. They began pressing fresh fruits and vegetables overnight into healthy, tasty drinks. This cold-pressed juice company has become a welcomed addition to the family business, offering various flavors and customizable options to suit individual health needs. Customers can purchase these delicious juices anytime at Potz and Panz. Felisha’s favorite foods from the kitchen are as spicy as her personality. When not managing events or pressing juice, she enjoys spending time with her spouse, traveling to warm destinations around the world.

A Legacy of Love and Community

Through it all, Demonica has remained committed to her roots and the rich culinary traditions that shaped her. She attributes much of her success to the early lessons learned from her grandmothers, the challenges she faced as a young woman, and the community that continues to support her. Today, Potz and Panz Gourmet Café remains a beloved culinary landmark, known for its soulful dishes, Wine Down Wednesdays, and daily specials that keep patrons coming back for more.

Demonica’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and an unyielding love for food and community. Her culinary creations, made from the heart, have not only nourished bodies but also created lasting memories for those lucky enough to experience her soulful cuisine. For Demonica Pugh, cooking is more than just a job – it is a legacy of love passed down through generations, and a gift she shares with the world, one dish at a time.
